Fatal Recall wins best Romantic Thriller

THANK YOU to N.N. Light for selecting
Fatal Recall as best Romantic Thriller of 2021

Hudson Kincaid prefers the wide-open spaces. But tracking down a serial killer means hanging out in Denver as he investigates neuroscientist Dr. Marilyn Monrose. So far, he can’t figure out if she’s city kitty in high heels, or a country kitten in cowgirl boots?

Marilyn’s experiments using ramped up virtual reality, captures the final moments of each murder victim’s life, a chilling discovery she’s trying to keep secret. The last thing she needs is a determined private detective barging into her lab—no matter how sexy he looks in his Stetson hat.

When word of her research is leaked to the press, Marilyn becomes the killer’s next target.
Now the woman Hudson races to save, is the one who has stolen his heart.

Hud stepped across the threshold and into Marilyn’s lab. She waited for the security door to close and lock before she spoke.
“Let me remind you, PI Kincaid, all information you learn here is classified. In fact, I found out yesterday the Government has shown a passing interest in my work.”
   “Our government?”
   “Yes, of course.”
   “Why?”
“I’m not aware of the specifics. But every application I can come up with sounds like Black Ops, or Army Intelligence, or something equally scary.”
“That sounds ominous. Maybe you’d better explain to me exactly what you’re doing?”
“If I take you into my confidence, you have to promise you won’t tell anyone. If they find out I leaked even one iota of this information, I will disappear. And you might too.”
“What do you mean by disappear?”
“I’ll be transferred to a lab Heaven-knows-where to continue the work until it’s completed, or my contract is up. Hard telling what will happen to you.”
This gave him pause. She sounded serious. But how could he rationalize being in possession of crucial information without sharing the data with the DPD—or at least with Marco?
   “Promise me.”
She was taking a leap of faith in trusting him, and the soulful pleading in her eyes made him want to comply. In fact, he wanted to promise her more than to keep his mouth shut. He wanted to promise her sunsets on the front porch and breakfast on the veranda.

Writing and Weaving share more than the letter W

Recently, I've become obsessed with weaving. Haven't been this fired up about anything in quite some time. But it really started twenty years ago when I began rescuing farm animals. My first two critters were Cowboy, a big Nubian goat from a petting zoo, and Precious, an angora goat confiscated from a terrible situation.

Having grown up with a hamster and small dog, taking care of larger animals was a pretty big leap. I was also a recent widow, so there was a great deal of sorrow to learn to live with as well as adjusting to being on my own again. Thank goodness the goats saved me rather than the other way around.

I moved to a patch of land and fell down the rabbit hole to a new world of farm terms, experiences, responsibilities, and people.

Precious, the goat, was afraid of being sheared with an electric clipper, so every year I would cut her mohair off with a scissors ( for safety the tip was blunted). To accomplish this took several hours, a very patient goat, and some oldies on the radio in the barn.

At the time, I had no immediate plans for the fleece, but I washed, dried and saved it by the bagful.

Also during this time of great transition, I pursued my dream of writing and publishing romance novels. I'd been writing for what seemed like forever. Being published proved to be another struggle full of disappointment with a huge dash of discouragement.

Then in 2009 my dream came true. One month before I turned sixty, my first book The Dragon and The Rose sold to the Wild Rose Press. Best birthday present ever.

During the next twelve years and fifteen books, my wonderful Precious grew old and passed away. Another heartbreak. But I always kept those bags of hair.

Now, as my desire for something new in my life reared its head, I looked at all that beautiful mohair and thought...I need to learn to spin and weave goat hair! So here I was again jumping into something foreign yet exciting.

After taking classes at the Longmont Yarn Shoppe, my VERY patient instructor Sara, brought the joy of weaving to my world, and one day I realized writing and weaving have several similarities. After all, you can spin a yarn, weave a tale, or follow the thread of a story. While weaving your mind is free to wander elsewhere conjuring great ideas for your next book, or solving a problem in your current endeavor.

When I write I use the planner and pantser (seat of your pants) approach to writing. When weaving there is somewhat the ability to use this approach. You need to know the general idea of the project and how much yarn to buy, but as you weave you can vary the pattern or colors just as in writing you can change the storyline, add characters, or even surprise yourself with a new ending. Both processes can be exciting and full of unexpected results.

Now when I lie awake in the middle of the night,  rather than always thinking about plot points and character arcs, I wonder about weaving techniques and "what ifs" for the next pattern I may want to try.  A picture or scrap of conversation can ignite the foundation for a new story, and seeing patterns and color combinations while out and about can spark ideas for a new pattern to weave. Both can be a joy and a frustration, but both have given me so much.

Line by line a book is written,
Row by row a scarf is woven.

My books are dedicated to those I love and those who have made my world a better place in which to live and grow. And whether spending hours and hours weaving or writing, in the end I hope I create something which will give happiness to others.

I think maybe I need to buy a spinning wheel.....

Praise Lady Gallant from Long and Short Reviews

Garrick is the perfect hero for Josie. He is the classic tough guy with a soft heart. I loved watching his tough exterior slowly melt away to reveal the caring man underneath. Josie is not only strong, but resourceful. With even the most basic necessities in short supply, Josie manages to procure food, firewood, and even medical supplies in order to care for her patients. The characters are relatable and the romance is touching. I highly recommend it to any fan of historical romance.

Praise for Lady Gallant from Still Moments Magazine

Set during the Crimean War, Lady Gallant provides an interesting look into history during the time of Florence Nightingale and the war itself. The setting is gripping as each scene shows the sadness and horrific side of battle and loss. The characters are sweet, compelling and caring. Their relationship shines through the story. If you want to get lost in history with a good romance, this is the book for you!

Cherry Red new from Darlene Fredette

5 stars for this fun and tasty read.

Blurb: This summer, ice cream entrepreneur Carly Redd's only focus is expanding her business—until she's coerced into attending her ex's engagement party. Showing up without a date is unthinkable. She reluctantly agrees to be escorted by her brother's co-worker, although doing so breaks her rule of not dating firefighters.

The daughter of the town's fire chief should wear a Do Not Touch sign, but firefighter Noah Harding's interest blazed the moment he saw Carly. Agreeing to be her fake boyfriend is a no-brainer, but convincing Carly to trust him with her heart is harder than extinguishing a fire.

Overstepping the platonic-only rule is as dangerous as fire and ice swirling into a tempting combustion.

A great addition to the Wild Rose Press--One Scoop or Two series

First of all, what a fun cover. This is a perfect little read to cuddle up with during the approaching Fall days. And it features ice cream and firemen…what more could you want?

The story brings together Carly Redd, who runs a local ice cream parlor, and Noah “Blaze” Harding, a fireman who runs her heart rate up.

Her father is a fireman, her brother is a fireman, and the guy who broke her heart was a fireman. Three strikes against Noah before he can even say “Hi”.  But fate brings them together when Carly is roped into attending an engagement party for an Ex, and Noah is volunteered as her date.

Carly has sworn off personal involvement with firemen, but how can she say no to handsome, thoughtful, and fun to be around Noah?  With the fire chief and Carly’s brother warning him off as far as dating her, maybe she won’t have to worry.

But Noah is persistent, just what we expect in our heroes. And although Carly has a few doubts about herself and her future, she also finds the courage to take a chance personally and professionally.

How they both overcome the obstacles, self-made and otherwise, offers a good story with ice cream experimentation and a motor cycle thrown in for good measure.

I always enjoy Darlene Fredette’s writing, and although a quick read, the characters were well developed and showed growth. A happy little escape

Fatal Recall 5 Stars from Reader's Favorite

Thank you Lesley at Reader's Favorite.

                https://books2read.com/u/mdD0Pw

Fatal Recall by Gini Rifkin tells the tale of Private Investigator Hudson Kincaid as he tracks down an elusive serial killer in Denver, Colorado. So far, the killer has left no clue about his identity and always seems one step ahead of the police. Kincaid must use all his experience to find the killer before he strikes again. His one lead is Dr. Marilyn Monrose: a neuroscientist whose virtual reality headgear enables her to relive the final moments of each victim.

Although Marilyn is drawn to Kincaid, she is far from impressed when he descends into her laboratory and begins to intrude on her research. She is determined to keep any details of her experiments confidential and makes Kincaid aware of the danger she would face if any of her research was leaked. As Kincaid's investigation deepens, Marilyn's work is disclosed to the media, and Kincaid’s journalist ex-girlfriend appears. The betrayal leaves Marilyn as the new focus for the killer, and it's up to Kincaid to save her.

Fatal Recall by Gini Rifkin has a gripping plot that will keep your attention throughout. The descriptive narrative is of an excellent standard, portraying a really dark and sinister atmosphere suited to the best crime novels. I loved the characters of Kincaid and Marilyn; the chemistry between them was excellent and their relationship developed perfectly. The scenes where Marilyn used the virtual reality headset added a very interesting layer to the plot. I also thought the backstory for Kincaid was superb as it gave us a clear insight into his thought processes.

There were so many moments of tension and I thought the scenes where we gained an insight into the cold and detached emotions of the killer were absolutely gripping. His disturbed, psychotic mind and his love for his cat, Princess, gave me goosebumps. The introduction of Kincaid’s ex-girlfriend, brought another layer of intrigue to the plot too. With its many twists and turns, I would highly recommend Fatal Recall.
